IAEA Chief Sees “Promising Ground” in Reinstating IAEA Inspections in Iran
(MENAFN) The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, emphasized Monday that reinstating IAEA inspections in Iran could open the door for broader advancements. Speaking before the IAEA Board of Governors, Grossi confirmed that Iran’s nuclear program remains central to the agency’s mission and said he has been “continuously and systematically” working to revive essential collaboration between the IAEA and Tehran.
He reported that “progress has been made” in ongoing technical talks aimed at restoring cooperation.
Grossi highlighted the significance of these negotiations, noting they showcase the value of “important diplomatic consultations and processes,” which hold promise and can “advance towards positive outcomes.”
“There is still time, not much, but always enough when there is good faith and a clear sense of responsibility,” Grossi added.
Iran halted cooperation with the IAEA following Israeli-U.S. strikes on its nuclear sites and the targeted killings of Iranian nuclear scientists in June. Despite the suspension, the nuclear watchdog maintains contact with Iranian officials. On Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi told the media that Iran and the IAEA are “very close” to reaching a new agreement on a framework to resume bilateral cooperation.
