Iran rejects claims of wanting to talk to US

(MENAFN) Iran has denied making any request to engage in direct talks with the United States, according to statements from the country's Foreign Ministry.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei dismissed recent comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed that Tehran had asked for a meeting. The remarks were made public on Tuesday, according to reports.

Baghaei’s response came after President Trump, speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House a day earlier, stated, "We have scheduled Iran talks, and they want to talk," and added, "They've requested a meeting and I'm going to go to a meeting, and if we can put something down on paper, that would be fine."

From April 12 to May 23, Washington and Tehran had participated in five rounds of indirect negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of U.S. sanctions. These discussions were mediated by Oman.

However, just two days before a planned sixth round of talks in Muscat on June 15, Israel carried out a large-scale airstrike campaign targeting various locations across Iran, including critical nuclear and military facilities. The attacks resulted in the deaths of senior military officials, nuclear experts, and numerous civilians.

Iran responded with multiple missile and drone assaults on Israeli territory. On June 22, U.S. forces struck three major Iranian nuclear facilities—Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan—in retaliation. That same day, Iran launched an attack on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

After nearly two weeks of escalating conflict, Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on June 24.
